Cameras target speeding drivers

SPEEDING motorists in the Loxley area are facing instant fines if they are caught on mobile safety cameras.

The South Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership is targeting Loxley Road following evidence that drivers are persistently breaking the speed limit.

The Partnership's mobile vans are being stationed on stretches of the road to encourage people to respect the limit, and to catch those who don't

So far, drivers have been clocked at over 40mph in the 30mph zone.

Officers staffing the van say they have been surprised at the frequency and severity of speeding on Loxley Road, and at other local sites including the main Wisewood junction.

They will continue to target the area during the peak morning and evening rush hours.

Speeders face an automatic £60 fine, plus three penalty points on their driving licence. They can opt to be dealt with by local magistrates, but this can result in an increased fine.

Members of the Safety Camera Partnership include South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield City Council, the Highways Agency, and the courts service.

The partnership was set up following pilot schemes elsewhere that dramatically cut road deaths and average speeds.
